Publisher: Emerald Publishing
Manuscript Submission Deadline: 30 September 2026
Submission Opens: 29 June 2026

Policing: An International Journal invites submissions for its Special Issue on “Advancing Knowledge on the Mission, Operations, and Impact of Crime Gun Intelligence Centers (CGICs) on Gun Crime and Community Safety.”

About the Special Issue

Crime Gun Intelligence Centers (CGICs) have emerged as an important innovation in firearm-related criminal investigations in the United States. By integrating advanced analytical and forensic technologies, CGICs seek to generate actionable crime gun intelligence, strengthen investigative capabilities, improve accountability, increase clearance rates, and contribute to reductions in firearm-related crime and violence.

Despite their growing adoption, scientific evidence concerning the implementation, effectiveness, and operational performance of CGICs remains limited. This Special Issue aims to strengthen the evidence base by bringing together rigorous research examining how, why, and under what conditions CGICs are most effective.

The issue welcomes process and impact evaluations as well as qualitative research examining organizational structures, operational practices, investigative outcomes, implementation challenges, and lessons learned from CGIC initiatives.

Topics of Interest

Submissions may address, but are not limited to:

  • Process evaluations of CGIC missions, operations, and procedures

  • Organizational structures and practices associated with successful CGICs

  • Impact of CGICs on gun crime and firearm violence

  • Crime gun recovery and investigative outcomes

  • Effects of CGICs on police investigative efficiency

  • Investigator perceptions and experiences with CGICs

  • CGIC implementation challenges and best practices

  • Lessons learned from existing CGIC initiatives

  • Qualitative analyses of CGIC cases and shooting investigations

  • Benefits and limitations of CGICs in firearm-related investigations

  • Relationships between CGICs and the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN)

  • Contributions of CGICs and NIBIN to investigative lead development and intelligence processes

Preferred Research Approaches

The Special Issue particularly encourages rigorous research using:

  • Process evaluations

  • Impact evaluations

  • Quantitative research

  • Qualitative research

  • Case-based analyses

  • Evidence-based policing approaches

Research should contribute to understanding CGIC implementation and performance while providing useful insights for police executives, investigators, policymakers, and researchers.
