Journal: Journal of Strategy and Management
Publisher: Emerald Publishing
Full Paper Submission Deadline: 30 March 2027
Expected Publication: January 2029

This Special Issue invites scholarly contributions examining how organizations formulate and adapt strategy when extreme disruptions fundamentally alter established institutional conditions, assumptions, sources of authority, and decision-making frameworks.

About the Special Issue

Organizations increasingly operate in environments shaped by profound disruptions, including pandemics, geopolitical conflicts, climate-related disasters, cyber threats, and rapid developments in generative artificial intelligence.

The Special Issue seeks to advance understanding of how organizations respond to such extreme institutional shocks, particularly how they:

  • Make strategic decisions under radical uncertainty

  • Adapt to rapidly changing institutional environments

  • Build organizational resilience

  • Maintain or rebuild legitimacy and stakeholder trust

  • Use strategic foresight and scenario planning

  • Interpret uncertainty through managerial sensemaking

  • Develop dynamic capabilities in response to unprecedented change

The issue also connects these challenges with broader societal resilience and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 8, SDG 9, and SDG 16.
