About the Journal
The Journal of Property, Planning and Environmental Law publishes original legal research for academic scholars, policy makers, and practitioners, including those working in real property, housing, legal and real estate practice, landlord and tenant law, environmental regulation, and land use planning.
In recent years, the journal has increasingly attracted submissions from around the world exploring contemporary issues in the property law realm, using both jurisdiction-specific and comparative approaches.
Scope & Focus Areas
The journal welcomes submissions across a broad range of property, planning, and environmental law themes. The editorial team is particularly keen to maintain an innovative and balanced blend of global and UK-focused submissions.
Global & Comparative Property Law
The journal actively publishes research exploring international and comparative dimensions of property law, including topics such as:
EU law developments in mortgage markets and non-performing loans
Speculative land fragmentation and land formation tools
Mandatory seller disclosure of environmental and flood risks
Legal structures in hybrid real estate development
Community land trust models and community-based land tenure
Strata law and leasehold reform across jurisdictions
Regulation of informal housing and urban reconstruction
UK Property Law
Noting the rapid pace of change within the UK property law scene, the editors especially welcome submissions from scholars working in this area. Topics of interest include:
Recent property law legislation such as the Leasehold Reform and Urban Development Act 2025, the Renters' Rights Act 2025, and Scotland's Land Reform Bill
Property law impacts of policies including Biodiversity Net Gain, buildings safety, and energy efficiency
Business rates reform and enabling housing development
Housing law, commercial leases, and rights to light
Boundary disputes, conveyancing, and agricultural property
Property guardianship and regulatory reform
Sub-standard housing and space standards enforcement
Tied leases and sectoral property arrangements

Key Deadlines
📅 This is an Open Call — There is NO submission deadline. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. Manuscripts that successfully pass peer review will be published in forthcoming general issues of the journal.
Special Issue Proposals
The journal is also happy to receive proposals for Special Issues on property law topics, or on any other topic falling within the journal's scope. Please discuss your idea with a member of the editorial team in the first instance before submitting a formal proposal.
Submission Guidelines
Authors are invited to discuss potential submissions with either of the journal's Assistant Editors, both of whom are UK property law scholars and are happy to advise on suitability and scope.
