“VSI: GenAI”

Overview

Generative AI (GAI) is fundamentally reshaping organizational processes, structures, and innovation paradigms. This special issue explores the dual nature of GAI, which offers transformative potential for operational efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and value co-creation, while simultaneously introducing profound ethical risks, concerns regarding workforce displacement, and potential "value co-destruction." The guest editors seek multidisciplinary, critical inquiries that move beyond celebratory narratives to examine the strategic opportunities and disruptive consequences of GAI integration in organizations and society.

Key Research Themes

  • Strategic & Operational Transformation: Impact on workforce structures, division of labor, professional identity, and the balance between efficiency gains and human-centric innovation.

  • Governance & Ethics: Mitigation of algorithmic bias, hallucinations, and diminished human oversight; evolving corporate governance frameworks; and transparency in high-stakes decision-making.

  • Value Dynamics: Analyzing the conditions under which GAI fosters value co-creation versus value co-destruction (e.g., misallocation of resources, ethical compromises, or erosion of stakeholder trust).

  • Employee Well-being & Agency: Impact on autonomy, psychological safety, cognitive dependency, and the risks of "Digital Taylorism" through algorithmic monitoring.

  • Inclusive Innovation: Leveraging GAI to address "grand challenges" (e.g., climate resilience, social welfare, or service delivery for marginalized communities) and managing infrastructure challenges in emerging economies.

Why This Issue Matters

As GAI becomes pervasive, organizations face a critical tension between harnessing its cognitive enabling powers and mitigating its potential to erode independent reasoning or reinforce structural inequalities. This special issue provides a vital scholarly platform to critically assess how organizations can navigate this dual-edged landscape, ensuring that GAI adoption remains aligned with responsible, ethical, and high-performing business practices.
