Overview

This special issue—published by Emerald Publishing—explores the emergence of Agentic Artificial Intelligence (Agentic AI) as a systemic organizational capability. Moving beyond reactive, human-prompted tools, agentic systems operate with increasing autonomy, enabling goal-driven planning, workflow orchestration, and machine-initiated action. The issue aims to advance theoretical and empirical understanding of how these systems are designed, governed, and experienced across complex organizational functions.

Key Research Themes

• Value Creation & Destruction: Investigating how Agentic AI drives efficiency and personalization versus risks like value co-destruction resulting from misaligned autonomy or decision logic.

• Governance & Accountability: Designing mechanisms for oversight, transparency, and trust when human intervention is limited or distributed, and the moral agency of AI systems remains ambiguous.

• Organizational Transformation: Reshaping business processes (HR, marketing, finance, operations) through the normalization of AI-embedded workflows and autonomous decision-making.

• Socio-Technical Dynamics: Examining the relational, emotional, and interactional dynamics of human–AI collaboration, particularly in "human-in-the-loop" designs.

• Theoretical Reconfiguration: Extending or adapting theories (Agency Theory, Socio-Technical Systems, Knowledge Management) to explain machine agency and independent coordination in modern enterprises.
