The Journal of Engineering Design invites submissions for its Special Issue titled "AI-Driven Human–System Interaction Models for Intelligent and Resilient Manufacturing."

About the Special Issue

The rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming modern manufacturing by enabling intelligent human–system interaction, improving operational resilience, and advancing engineering design. AI-powered technologies such as digital twins, adaptive interfaces, predictive analytics, and collaborative robotics are enhancing productivity, safety, usability, and decision-making across industrial environments.

This Special Issue seeks contributions that explore innovative engineering design approaches for AI-enabled manufacturing systems. It welcomes research addressing the opportunities and challenges of designing human-centric, safe, transparent, and resilient manufacturing environments while considering interoperability, cybersecurity, ergonomics, sustainability, and intelligent automation.

Scope and Topics of Interest

Submissions may address, but are not limited to:

• Design principles for AI-driven human–machine interaction

• Digital twin-enabled engineering design

• AI-assisted safety, ergonomics, and usability engineering

• Intelligent interface design for collaborative robots

• Smart factory systems and adaptive production environments

• Real-time control and AI-supported decision-making

• Human-in-the-loop manufacturing systems

• Multi-agent robotic systems and collaborative automation

• Predictive maintenance using AI analytics

• Cybersecure interaction design for industrial systems

• Cognitive load, situational awareness, and user adaptation

• Industrial sensing architectures and real-time operational feedback

Submission Guidelines

• Manuscript Submission Deadline: 30 September 2026

• Original research articles, technical notes, perspectives, editorials, review papers, and positioning papers are welcome.

• Authors should submit manuscripts through the Journal of Engineering Design online submission system.

• During submission, authors should select the Special Issue title "AI-Driven Human–System Interaction Models for Intelligent and Resilient Manufacturing."

• Manuscripts should follow the journal's Instructions for Authors before submission.
