Financial Misconduct in Emerging Markets: Institutions, Market Consequences, and Regulatory Responses

Journal: International Journal of Emerging Markets
Publisher: Emerald Publishing
Closing Date: 1 January 2027

The International Journal of Emerging Markets invites theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented research for a Special Issue examining financial misconduct in emerging markets, with particular attention to institutional environments, market consequences, regulatory effectiveness, and investor protection.

About the Special Issue

Financial misconduct—including fraud, earnings manipulation, insider trading, corruption, and market manipulation—can undermine investor confidence, distort price discovery, and increase the cost of capital.

While these issues have been widely examined in developed economies, comparatively less is known about their causes and consequences in emerging markets. The Special Issue seeks to advance understanding of how factors such as regulatory enforcement, institutional quality, political connections, state ownership, family control, external monitoring, fintech, digital platforms, and crypto-assets influence financial misconduct and its detection.

Key Research Areas

  • Insider trading and market manipulation

  • Corruption and political connections

  • ESG, sustainability, and corporate misconduct

  • Financial misconduct in fintech and digital finance

  • Crypto-related fraud in emerging economies

  • Enforcement quality and regulatory capacity
