Overview
This special issue—published by Emerald—aims to provide a coherent, evidence-based understanding of the value and impact generated by digital transformation in the built environment. Despite widespread technology adoption, practitioners often struggle to justify the rationale for these investments due to unclear value propositions and uncertain returns. The issue seeks research that moves beyond implementation challenges to demonstrate tangible, measurable, and context-specific value—whether quantitative (efficiency, financial KPIs) or qualitative (decision-making, sustainability, service quality).
Key Research Themes
Value Conceptualization & Measurement: Frameworks for assessing the value of digital technologies for individuals, organizations, and socio-technical systems.
Impact Evaluation: Evidence-based analysis of the economic, social, environmental (ESG), and organizational impacts of digital technologies in facilities management, real estate, and construction.
Use Cases & Adoption: Examination of established and emerging digital use cases, including why actors adopt them and the resulting implications for effectiveness and sustainability.
Interdisciplinary Perspectives: Research integrating insights from facility management, architecture, building engineering, finance, organizational studies, and service design.
