Overview
This special issue—published by Emerald—focuses on the vital intersection of geotechnical engineering and renewable energy. As global carbon neutrality targets drive the adoption of geothermal solutions, "energy geo-structures" (such as energy piles, tunnels, and diaphragm walls) are becoming essential tools for sustainable development. This issue invites research that addresses critical barriers to geothermal deployment, such as heat transfer inefficiencies, thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupling in complex geological environments, and the long-term structural stability of energy-integrated geotechnical systems.
Key Research Themes
Design & Optimization: Innovative structural designs and performance enhancement of energy geo-structures.
Mechanisms & Coupling: Multi-scale heat transfer research and THM coupling analyses of geothermal systems.
Testing & Simulation: Advanced research methods, including field testing, scaled model testing, and numerical simulations.
Material Science: Modification of geotechnical materials to optimize the synergy between mechanical and thermal properties.
Service & Stability: Long-term behavior assessments and stability evaluation frameworks for energy-integrated infrastructure.
