𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming development practice across the Global South. From data collection and analysis to language support, automated decision-making, and chatbot-based engagement, AI technologies are creating new opportunities for enhancing development interventions. However, the rapid adoption of AI also raises significant concerns regarding inequality, ethics, labour conditions, exclusion, environmental sustainability, and the real-world implications of AI-driven systems.
Development in Practice invites submissions for its Special Issue titled Artificial Intelligence and Development Practice in the Global South. The Special Issue seeks original research articles, viewpoints, and practice notes that critically examine how AI is shaping development practices and affecting the lives of individuals and communities across the Global South.
The issue particularly emphasises practical and societal impacts of AI rather than purely technical developments, encouraging evidence-based discussions on both the opportunities and challenges associated with AI adoption in development contexts.

Submissions may address, but are not limited to:
• AI and social, economic, and digital inequalities
• Errors and risks introduced by AI tools in research and development practice
• Labour market transformations and employment challenges associated with AI adoption
• Unequal access to AI technologies and digital infrastructure
• Gender inequalities and social disparities arising from AI deployment
• Ethical challenges in AI-assisted proposal writing and research practices
• AI and job security concerns across development sectors
• Environmental impacts of AI, including energy consumption, mining, and e-waste generation
• Humanitarian and ethical implications of replacing human interaction with AI interfaces
• Bias, prejudice, and discriminatory outcomes in AI-generated responses
• Applying global AI systems to address local development challenges
• Regulatory and governance challenges associated with AI use
• AI applications in social protection, welfare targeting, and digital identification systems
• AI in agriculture and food systems and its implications for smallholder livelihoods
