CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue on Design and Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Journal: Design and Artificial Intelligence

Publisher: Elsevier

Submission Deadline: 1 August 2026

Introduction

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the landscape of design education — transforming how design is taught, learned, practiced, and theorized. From AI-assisted ideation tools in the studio classroom to intelligent tutoring systems and generative models that challenge longstanding notions of authorship and creativity, the intersection of AI, design, and education raises urgent but productive questions for researchers, educators, and practitioners alike.

This Special Issue of Design and Artificial Intelligence (DAAI) invites original contributions that examine, critique, and advance the relationship between AI and design education across disciplines — including industrial design, graphic design, architecture, interaction design, design thinking, and adjacent creative fields.

Scope & Significance

As generative AI tools become increasingly embedded in design workflows and educational environments, design education faces a critical juncture. Questions of pedagogy, creativity, authorship, equity, assessment, and professional identity are all being reconfigured. This Special Issue provides a timely, dedicated platform for rigorous scholarship that advances understanding of these transformations — informing both theory and practice in design education.

List of Topic Areas

Manuscripts are invited on themes including, but not limited to:

  1. AI tools and generative technologies in design pedagogy and studio practice

  2. Curriculum development and competency frameworks for AI-literate designers

  3. Critical and ethical perspectives on AI integration in design education

  4. Learning analytics and empirical evidence — studies using process logs, artifact traces, controlled or field evaluations, and comparative baselines (before/after, with/without AI, different tool strategies)

  5. Human-AI collaboration in student learning and design processes

  6. Assessment, feedback, and evaluation in AI-augmented design courses

  7. Design education for and about responsible AI development

  8. Cross-disciplinary and project-based approaches to teaching design and AI

  9. Equity, access, and inclusion in AI-enabled design learning environments

  10. Theoretical frameworks for understanding AI's role in design knowledge and creativity

  11. Institutional and policy dimensions of AI adoption in design schools

  12. New challenges posed by generative AI tools in design education

  13. Authorship, originality, and intellectual property in AI-assisted student design work

  14. Studio culture and professional identity in the age of AI

  15. International and cross-cultural perspectives on AI integration in design education
