Artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping contemporary information environments by determining which messages audiences see, how those messages are framed, and when they are delivered. Algorithmic targeting, generative content, virtual influencers, and large language models have transformed strategic communication and advertising into powerful yet often invisible systems of persuasion.
This Article Collection examines the growing asymmetry between sophisticated AI-driven persuasion systems and the ability of audiences to recognize, evaluate, and resist them. It seeks to explore how individuals and institutions respond to AI-mediated persuasion and how ethical, legal, and policy frameworks can evolve to protect audience agency in algorithmically driven communication environments.
The collection welcomes multidisciplinary, theoretically grounded, and policy-relevant contributions that advance understanding of AI-mediated persuasion and its implications for audiences, communicators, and regulators.
