Healthcare financing plays a central role in achieving universal health coverage and improving health outcomes in emerging and developing economies. In low- and middle-income countries, the structure of healthcare financing determines access to care, financial protection for households, and the long-term sustainability of health systems.
Despite global commitments to universal health coverage, healthcare financing remains a major challenge across developing regions. High out-of-pocket expenditures continue to push millions into poverty each year, while limited fiscal capacity and constrained public spending hinder equitable healthcare delivery. At the same time, innovations such as digital financial services, mobile money, and fintech platforms are creating new opportunities for premium collection, risk pooling, and improved financial access.
This Article Collection seeks to advance rigorous research at the intersection of health economics, financial economics, and development economics by exploring how healthcare financing mechanisms can improve equity, financial protection, and health system performance in emerging and developing economies.
