Overview

This special issue—published by Emerald Publishing—investigates the intersection of algorithmic biases (embedded in data, models, and computational architectures) and behavioral biases (rooted in human cognition, organizational routines, and institutional structures). By adopting a socio-technical lens, the issue explores how these biases co-evolve during the implementation of AI, creating "hybrid" forms of bias that significantly influence organizational decision-making, fairness, and performance.

Key Research Themes

• Integrated Bias Dynamics: Exploring how technical AI biases (e.g., model opacity, feedback loops) interact with human cognitive biases (e.g., automation bias, overconfidence) in work processes.

• Organizational & Ethical Governance: Strategies for mitigating discrimination and ensuring transparency, accountability, and regulatory compliance (e.g., alignment with the European AI Act).

• Socio-Technical Impact: Analyzing AI’s influence on equity, inclusion, job quality, and sustainability across various functional domains such as Human Resource Management (HRM), operations, and strategic planning.

• Methodological Innovations: Developing frameworks and methodologies to identify, measure, and mitigate biases within hybrid human–AI decision systems.

  • Scope: Studies must be based on international data or multi-country contexts; single-country/national studies will not be considered.

  • Conceptual Papers: Accepted only if they provide exceptionally strong and innovative theoretical insights.
