British Food Journal invites submissions for its Special Issue on Alternative Proteins for Sustainable and Ethical Food Systems: Consumer, Production, and Supply-Chain Perspectives.

About the Special Issue

As concerns over climate change, biodiversity loss, animal welfare, and food security continue to grow, alternative proteins—including plant-based products, cultured meat, insect-based foods, and dairy alternatives—are emerging as key components of sustainable food systems. While consumer acceptance has received considerable attention, there remains a need for research that connects individual decision-making with broader production, governance, and supply-chain dynamics.

This Special Issue welcomes interdisciplinary research examining alternative proteins from both consumer and system-level perspectives. It seeks contributions that explore production systems, value-chain transformation, regulatory frameworks, sustainability, market development, and stakeholder interactions to advance a holistic understanding of the transition toward sustainable and ethical food systems.
