Atlantic Studies invites submissions for its Special Issue on Seeds of Empire, Roots of Change: Botany and the Atlantic World.

About the Special Issue

This interdisciplinary Special Issue explores how plants, botanical knowledge, and human practices have shaped the Atlantic World through colonial expansion, trade, migration, and environmental change. It seeks to examine the historical, cultural, ecological, and scientific dimensions of plant movement across oceans and their lasting impact on societies, landscapes, and knowledge systems.

The issue welcomes contributions that investigate the circulation of plants and botanical knowledge through exploration, commerce, Indigenous traditions, and colonial networks. It encourages research that connects environmental history, literature, cultural studies, geography, and the history of science while highlighting the role of plants in shaping the Atlantic world's ecological and cultural transformations.

Submission Information

• Abstract Submission Deadline: 01 June 2026

• Manuscript Submission Deadline: 01 September 2027

• Authors should submit a title, 500-word abstract, and one-page CV by the abstract deadline.

• Notification of acceptance: 01 July 2026

• Draft articles (maximum 10,000 words): 15 February 2027

• Accepted authors are expected to participate in a two-day workshop in Madrid (11–12 March 2027) and commit to publication in the Special Issue, subject to successful peer review.

• Abstracts and CVs should be submitted to the designated contact specified in the Call for Papers.

• All submissions must follow the journal's official Instructions for Authors.

• Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere.
