The global business environment is undergoing a profound transformation, moving away from purely market-driven efficiency toward an era where geopolitical interests, economic security, and state strategies increasingly shape corporate decisions. Rising geopolitical tensions have accelerated the return of industrial policy, making firmsโ competitive advantages dependent not only on market capabilities but also on their ability to respond strategically to political and institutional changes.
South Korea and China represent particularly important contexts for examining these developments. As global leaders in strategic industries such as semiconductors, electric vehicle batteries, and artificial intelligence, both countries stand at the forefront of techno-nationalism, protectionism, and global value chain restructuring. Firms in these economies are facing growing institutional uncertainties arising from shifting policy priorities, evolving regulatory frameworks, and geopolitical competition.
This Special Issue invites research that explores how firms in South Korea and Chinaโor businesses directly connected to these marketsโnavigate geopolitical rivalry and institutional volatility. It seeks to advance understanding of industrial policy, non-market strategies, corporate adaptation, and global value chain realignment, while generating broader insights relevant to the Asia-Pacific and global business landscape.

Geopolitical competition and industrial policy are increasingly redefining international business strategy and corporate governance. Understanding how firms adapt to institutional instability, shifting state priorities, and global value chain disruptions has become critical for scholars, managers, and policymakers alike.
This Special Issue provides an opportunity to develop new theoretical and practical insights into how businesses in Korea and China navigate geopolitical uncertainty, formulate effective non-market strategies, and build resilience in an era of economic fragmentation and strategic competition.
