Geographical Principles in the New Era of Spatial Analysis and Modeling

Journal: Annals of GIS
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
Manuscript Submission Deadline: 31 December 2026

Annals of GIS invites submissions for its Special Issue on Geographical Principles in the New Era of Spatial Analysis and Modeling.

About the Special Issue

Advances in geospatial technologies, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and big geospatial data have transformed spatial analysis and modeling. Despite these technological developments, fundamental geographical principles—including location, place, region, movement, spatial interaction, scale, and temporal dynamics—remain central to understanding and modeling geographic processes.

This Special Issue seeks theoretical, methodological, and applied research that demonstrates how foundational geographical principles continue to shape contemporary GIScience and GeoAI. Contributions are encouraged to bridge classical geographic thinking with emerging analytical approaches, offering innovative solutions to real-world spatial, environmental, urban, and societal challenges.

Topics of Interest

Submissions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Spatial analysis and modeling grounded in geographical principles

  • Theoretical and conceptual studies in spatial analysis and GIScience

  • GeoAI, machine learning, and deep learning for spatial modeling

  • Spatial interpolation, prediction, and simulation

  • Spatial networks and complex geospatial systems

  • Geographic data analysis using remote sensing, volunteered geographic information, trajectory data, and geospatial big data

  • Uncertainty, explainability, and interpretability in spatial modeling

  • Comparative evaluation of geography-based analytical methods

  • Applications in environmental, urban, social, and GIScience research

Preferred Article Types

The journal welcomes:

  • Original Research Articles

  • Theoretical Studies

  • Methodological Papers

  • Applied Research
