This Special Issue invites scholarship that centres Indigenous knowledge systems, sovereignty, and wellbeing to critically examine the foundations of leisure research and reimagine the future of leisure studies. While leisure has traditionally been framed through Western, individualised, and market-oriented paradigms, Indigenous perspectives emphasise collective relationships, responsibilities toward lands and waters, intergenerational continuity, and the ethical stewardship of cultural and natural resources.

The Special Issue seeks contributions that re-theorise leisure as a practice deeply embedded in Indigenous genealogies, communities, ceremonies, and everyday acts of cultural resurgence. It also welcomes empirical studies demonstrating how leisure spaces and practicesโ€”including sport, recreation, arts, festivals, and digital communitiesโ€”can reproduce or challenge colonial power structures, reclaim Indigenous worldviews, and transform leisure systems.

By positioning Indigeneity at the centre of leisure scholarship, this issue aims to shift the focus from Indigenous inclusion toward Indigenous transformation.

The Special Issue highlights how leisure practices can serve as vehicles for cultural revitalisation, youth development, land- and water-based recreation, environmental stewardship, and health promotion. It also examines how institutional arrangementsโ€”including funding systems, facilities, curricula, and mediaโ€”can be transformed to uphold Indigenous rights, self-determination, and community aspirations.

The issue aims to consolidate emerging Indigenous-led leisure scholarship and provide theoretical, methodological, and practical frameworks for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working toward more inclusive and transformative leisure systems.
