ABOUT THIS SPECIAL ISSUE
The use of AI in construction is increasing rapidly, as demonstrated in recent literature reviews. The ethical aspects of AI play a key role in international policy-making activities — such as the EU AI Act — and have been actively researched in domains like technology and finance. However, ethical aspects of AI are not yet properly investigated in the construction industry due to the novelty of the topic. Ethical awareness will be increasingly needed as AI evolves, particularly in the context of emerging World Models and Agentic AI systems.
This special issue aims to present and discuss the main aspects related to the ethical use of AI for the construction industry, addressing key topics such as transparency and trust, privacy, security, ownership and liability, biases and inclusivity, as well as workforce impact.
SCOPE & THEME AREAS
We invite submissions addressing (but not limited to) the following themes:
Governance and regulatory framework — How existing and emerging regulatory frameworks — such as the EU AI Act — shape the ethical deployment of AI in construction.
Transparency and trust — Mechanisms for ensuring transparency in AI-driven construction processes and building stakeholder trust in AI systems.
Privacy, security, ownership, and liability — Ethical and legal challenges related to data privacy, cybersecurity, intellectual property, and liability in AI-enabled construction.
Biases and inclusivity — Identifying and addressing algorithmic biases in construction AI and promoting inclusive, equitable outcomes across diverse populations.
Workforce impact — The implications of AI adoption on construction workforce skills, employment, roles, and human-machine collaboration.
Agentic AI and World Models — Ethical considerations around the emergence of autonomous AI agents and World Models in construction contexts.
