Overview
This special issue focuses on safety in the low-altitude economy, including drones, urban air mobility, air taxis, and unmanned aerial systems. It highlights the opportunities and risks created by rapid growth in this space, especially around airspace management, human-machine interaction, cybersecurity, and regulation. The issue invites original research, reviews, and case studies from academia, industry, and policymakers.

Scope
The call is aimed at research on safety-related aspects of the low-altitude economy across air, ground, and combined risk domains. It welcomes interdisciplinary work that offers evidence-based solutions for the challenges created by fast-moving and relatively uncoordinated growth in LAE systems. Topics include safety challenges, solutions, and innovations connected to transport, logistics, public services, and governance.

Submission Information
Manuscripts may be submitted any time before the deadline of 31 March 2027. The journal’s Editorial Manager system is open for this special issue, and authors should select “VSI: SafeLAE” when submitting. The call notes that submissions suitable for review will be evaluated by at least two independent reviewers, and accepted papers will be published in the next regular issue while also appearing on the special issue webpage.
