About the Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies (JTSDS):
JTSDS is a pioneer in disaster management education and research, engaging in cutting-edge studies on climate change, sustainable development, and risk reduction. In collaboration with the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA), TISS is working on evaluating and strengthening disaster risk reduction programs in Bihar.


Project Overview

The Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) and TISS have partnered under an MoU signed in October 2024 to evaluate and enhance disaster management programs. The project aims to:

  1. Evaluate flagship programs – Mukhyamantri School Safety Program (MSSP) and Road Safety Programme.
  2. Assess training needs and competencies of public sector disaster management professionals.
  3. Conduct a social vulnerability assessment for a selected district.
  4. Explore the link between social vulnerability and psychosocial well-being.

Position Details

TISS is hiring four Senior Research Officers (SROs) to contribute to the research and evaluation of disaster management initiatives.

1. Senior Research Officer (Road Safety Programme)

Responsibilities:

  • Research and manage projects related to road safety.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research in GIS, analytics, and assessment tools.
  • Develop risk matrices and conduct rapid visual surveys.
  • Engage in fieldwork, site visits, data collection, and stakeholder communication.
  • Prepare research reports and present findings to different stakeholders.

2. Senior Research Officer (MukhyaMantri School Safety Programme – MSSP)

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on school safety, curriculum evaluation, and educational frameworks.
  • Develop training modules and assess pedagogy effectiveness.
  • Study the impact of technology in rural education.
  • Conduct awareness and training program evaluations.
  • Prepare research reports and present findings to various stakeholders.

3. Senior Research Officer (Training Needs & Competency Assessment)

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct training needs and competency assessments for disaster management professionals.
  • Work on flood risk mitigation strategies and field-based assessments.
  • Develop disaster resilience frameworks for at-risk communities.
  • Collaborate with government officials, local communities, and institutions.
  • Utilize GIS, remote sensing, and qualitative research for competency assessments.
  • Prepare research reports and present findings to different stakeholders.

4. Senior Research Officer (Social Vulnerability & Psychosocial Well-Being)

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct social vulnerability assessments and mental health research.
  • Develop vulnerability indices using large-scale data analysis, GIS, and remote sensing.
  • Research the intersection of disaster impact and mental health well-being.
  • Apply ethnographic methods to assess psychosocial vulnerabilities.
  • Prepare research reports and present findings to different stakeholders.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualifications:

  • Essential: PhD with 55% marks (or equivalent GPA) in relevant disciplines such as Disaster Management, Social Sciences, Public Policy, Environmental Studies, GIS, Remote Sensing, Psychology, or Education.
  • Desirable:
    • 1-2 years of research/teaching experience in qualitative and quantitative methods, data analysis, GIS, and remote sensing.
    • Prior experience in any of the four project domains will be preferred.
    • Experience in transdisciplinary research methodologies.

  • The institute reserves the right to relax eligibility criteria based on work experience.
  • Candidates already working in universities/research institutions must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer.
  • No TA/DA will be provided for the interview process.
  • Selection does not guarantee permanency; the post is purely contractual.
